Minding My Manners: Your Week 5 Fantasy Scoutlook
As a new columnist here, I’ve been itching to make some fantasy football predictions. The problem is I’m not very good with titles. Every fantasy column these days has a clever name like The Talented Mr. Roto, or even a cool theme like this one. So I would like to thank Adam for giving me the opportunity to write for an already established audience. I’ve got some big shoes to fill considering you almost threw a perfect game last week. That is, if it weren’t for Earl Bennett struggling and the Titans Defense getting stomped by the Jags. I think I’ll take this opportunity to get a little creative with my picks, because if they don’t work out, the readers will probably just blame you anyway. …read more
PSL’s NFL Power Rankings – Week 5
After losing in week 2, the Patriots seem to be taking down undefeated teams, one at a time. In week 3, they beat the Falcons and now have handed the Ravens their first loss of the season. Denver is next in their sights.
The most important key to staying high in the power rankings is staying healthy. The Giants may have run into a problem as Eli Manning could miss this weekend’s game against the Raiders. Troy Polamalu’s absence is what has given the Steelers their 2-2 start. However, he could be back as early as this week. Donovan McNabb and Brian Westbrook both returned to practice for the Eagles, making them a dangerous team to break back into the top ten.
Week 5 will bring many important games. Match-ups to watch include Cincinnati at Baltimore, Atlanta at San Francisco, New England at Denver, Indianapolis at Tennessee, and New York Jets at Miami on Monday Night.

Week 4: Fantasy Recap
Trends. Successful Fantasy Football owners are ahead of major trends.
The best way to predict future success is to look back at past performance. When drafting a Fantasy Football team, previous season performance is the best indicator of future success.
Making difficult roster decisions in the middle of the season requires a more narrow focus. Players and teams get on hot or cold streaks that can carry from week-to-week. Paying attention to these streaks can help you lead your team to fantasy victory. Read more…
Minding My Manners: Your Week 4 Fantasy Scoutlook
Football is a game of inches, but fantasy football is a game of 10-yard increments and scores. An inch in fantasy football doesn’t mean squat, unless we’re talking those 3,600 inches that break the 100-yard milestone. So, week to week, the points don’t have to be pretty. They don’t have to help your player’s team win. They just have to help you get to 2-2, rather than walking out of Week 4 with a losing record.
This week’s edition of Minding My Manners may be the most important thus far. Philadelphia, Carolina, Arizona and Atlanta are the first four teams to get the chance to vacation in Cancun for a week, also known as the bye week. For your fantasy team, that means replacements may be in need. But can you trust those players? …read more
Can ‘Slice’ cut it in the UFC?
From freak show to the big show. Almost. Kevin ‘Kimbo Slice’ Ferguson has taken an unlikely path to mixed martial arts notoriety – initially hitting the scene on YouTube, showcasing his punching power in videotaped street fights. Tonight, he will be featured in the UFC’s Ultimate Fighter 10, facing the stiffest test of his green MMA career – former IFL champion Roy ‘Big Country’ Nelson. It is one of the most anticipated bouts in the the Ultimate Fighter series, which has produced former UFC champions Forrest Griffin and Rashad Evans in addition to numerous contenders in the octagon. Can Kimbo silence the critics and demonstrate the skills he has been honing under the guidance of Quentin Jackson? That’s the question MMA fans have been bickering over ever since the grizzled beast joined the game. …read more
PSL’s NFL Power Rankings – Week 4
If you would have told anybody that after three weeks, the Steelers would have two losses, the Broncos would be undefeated, and the Panthers had a worse record than the Lions, they might have called you crazy.
This week Drew Brees threw for just 172 yards and no touchdowns. The Saints still won. Kevin Kolb got his first NFL victory, albeit, against the Chiefs.
Week 4 begins bye-weeks. The Cardinals, Falcons, Panthers, and Eagles all have byes this coming week. That means all seven undefeated teams will play. The Jets travel to the Superdome to face the Saints, so there will be at least one less undefeated team next week (unless they tie).

Historic Day for the Skins

Ralph Friedgen owes a great deal of thanks to Dan Snyder, Vinny Cerrato, and Jim Zorn for drawing my wrath this week. However, you are officially on notice, fat man. After witnessing the futility of your supposedly innovative offense against Rutgers on Saturday, I can’t help but wonder how much of the 100 lbs you lost in the off season was brain mass. I would be calling for your head if I could figure out where it ends and your body begins, but I digress.
Yesterday my beloved Washington Redskins made NFL history by ending the second longest losing streak in NFL history. The over-hyped, over-paid, and under-coached Redskins were held scoreless in the first half by a defense that had allowed a combined 72 points over their first two games. The Skins did score two second half touchdowns but never lead once. Highly paid corners like DeAngelo Hall ($5 million in 2009), Fred Smoot ($2.7 million), and Carlos Rodgers ($1.4 million) were repeatedly burnt by a rookie quarterback and the lesser of two Johnsons. Matthew Stafford and Bryant Johnson hooked up four times at 18.3 yards per catch, including an acrobatic 21 yard touchdown reception over Carlos Rodgers with 1:20 left in the 1st quarter. By the way, it takes a big man not to laugh at statements like “the lesser of two Johnsons” and the thought of Matt Stafford and Bryant Johnson’s acrobatic hookup. I am not that man. …read more
Week 3: Fantasy Recap

Fantasy Sports and the stock market have many, many similarities. In order to be successful in either you must be aware of trends BEFORE they take place. In fantasy, much like the stock market, it is all about value. Successful managers pick-up (or buy) players when their value is relatively low, and wait for that investment to mature. If an undervalued player reaches his maturity you can either hold him if you think his performance is sustainable, or deal him to capitalize on his performance because an expected cold streak.
A player’s fantasy value is very dynamic; changing constantly. An injury report, a coaches decision, or a gun-shot wound to the thigh could affect a player’s value at any time. In Fantasy Football a player’s value can change considerably after every game. For savvy fantasy investors, opportunities to buy low on a player present themselves every week. Read more…
The Replacements
To the common sports fan, the refs are nothing more than the ones that screwed up the game over a bad call. But the truth is the refs actually have a tough job; really tough. First of all to be truly objective is near impossible to do, and to dedicate your life to a sport with out actually getting to root for one of the teams is just torture.
The way that I view the NBA referee strike is 2 fold at this point. On the one hand the action taken by the NBA is a little underhanded. By simply hiring new referees from the NBA development league, the referee’s Union is completely undercut and essentially worthless. On the other hand, the NBA needs to have refs in order for their games to take place, and they can’t simply sit back and watch as their league falls apart over a silly argument. Now when I say silly; let me clarify. Senior refs in the NBA are making salary of around $500,000 per year and are concerned because the league would like to revamp the pension and severance packages to be more in accordance with their declining budget. With the current make-up of the economy, I would say that a half a mil each year isn’t looking to bad right now.
With the possibility of all new referees starting the season as a result of the lockout, I thought it would be interesting to examine the status of the officiating class before and after this change: …read more
Minding My Manners: Your Week 3 Fantasy Scoutlook
There are no mulligans in this game, but every now and then I’d like a Minding My Manners mulligan. Last week, was one instance where that was the case. Sure, Tony Romo had a bad game, just as I predicted, but we won’t even talk about some of the other picks. This week the NFL schedule doesn’t provide too many good watches for fans, but there should be some fantasy standouts by the time the weekend winds down.
I’m back to resuscitate my reputation as I pick the Week 3 must starts and must sits for your fantasy football team. And if these picks don’t pan out this week, just stop the CPR, turn the ambulance around and pull the plug. Or just call me bad names like “loser” or “chump” or “Brad Evans”… read more
