Top 10 Current Athletes That’d Give Fans ‘Roid Rage
Steroids are almost becoming like second-nature in sports. Fans can no longer be surprised when they hear that one of their favorite athletes was juicing. Obviously, it’s most common in baseball, but has been seen in other sports. Former Olympic gold medal sprinter, Justin Gatlin, was banned for using an illegal substance. In 2006, Chargers’ linebacker, Shawne Merriman, was suspended by the NFL for steroid use.
Some of the players involved, such as A-rod and Merriman, are able to try and patch-up their tarnished image. Others, like Gatlin, find it difficult to do so. Either way, after a player has tested positive, fans no longer see them the same way. Below is a list of current athletes who are, as far as we know, clean. From ten to one, we’ll countdown which of these athletes would break the most hearts.
Honorable Mention
An honorable mention must be made to Sidney Crosby. If Wayne Gretzky were still playing, he’d be on there. “The Kid” is not quite there yet. Maybe one day.
10. Tiger Woods
Even though golf is really not a sport you relate to streoids, it’s not out of the question. There are performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) that golfers could use. Not only could they increase power, but there are also drugs out there to increase concentration, a huge part of golf.
9. Roger Federer
Again, tennis is not usually associated with steroids, but there are drugs to enhance performance. Federer recently broke the record for Grand Slams, giving him the most all time at 15. Other then Rafael Nadal and recent U.S. Open winner, Juan Martin del Potro, nobody has been able to touch him.
8. Usain Bolt
At the 2008 Olympics in China, Bolt broke both the world and Olympic records in the 100m dash, 200m dash, and was part of the team that broke the record in the 4x100m relay. He became the first man to set a record in all three events in a single Olympics. Since then, he’s smashed both his 100m and 200m world-record times. With former champions like Gatlin and Marion Jones shot down by positive steroid tests, Bolt has become the face of sprinting.
7. Kobe Bryant
The reason Kobe isn’t higher is simply because not all the fans like him. Setting that aside, he is one of the best players in NBA history. Not to mention he has 4 Championship rings.
6. Derek Jeter
A couple months ago, this would have been Derek Jeter and David Ortiz, depending on if you favored the Red Sox or Yankees. Recently, however, David Ortiz has been eliminated from the list because he tested positive for PEDs in 2003. Boston fans’ hearts were broken.5. Peyton Manning
Peyton Manning is number 5 instead of some other quaterback because he has the numbers. Tom Brady has multiple championships and broke Manning’s single season TD record, but his numbers aren’t up there as consistently. Manning is usually a shoe-in to put up big stats. That could change this year, but more people hate Brady. Plus, how could you not love the multiple commercials Manning does?4. Lebron James
The biggest name in the NBA. One of the few, other then Kobe, where people refer to them by their first name, not last. If Lebron used steroids, the NBA would have to find a new face.3. Albert Pujols
Everyone thought A-Rod could become the face of the MLB, until the report came out that he tested positive while with the Texas Rangers. Enter Albert Pujols. This season his stats have been through the roof. If Pujols tests positive for any type of PED, baseball fans just might lose hope on finding a legitimate home run hitting machine.
2. Lance Armstrong
Although he didn’t win the Tour de France this year in his return, Lance’s career more than makes up for it. Not only did he come back after battling testicular cancer, he still won. Lance won the tour a record 7 straight years (99-05). He’s won tons of awards, including the ESPY for Best Male Athlete in 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006. There have been a couple of allegations that Armstrong has use PEDs, but nothing has been proven.
1. Michael Phelps
A big stink was made when a photo came out with Phelps smoking marijuana. He’s the USA’s golden boy. Not only one of the greatest swimmers of all time, but Olympians in general. He has won a record 14 career Olympic gold medals. Up until last month, he had not lost a major individual race in four years. Phelps has also broken over 30 world records in swimming. At the age of 24, he has already won World Swimmer of the Year 5 times and American Swimmer of the Year 7 times.

Interesting list but i think tiger woods should be higher than Usain Bolt. If this Olympic runner was an American I would say possibly, but Tiger woods is the face of golf, he has won 14 majors and is on the verge of breaking Jack Niclaus record of majors won. I do however applaud you for not putting Sidney Crosby on this list, he is the face of the NHL with Ovechkin but, crosby cries to much and Oveckin plays for the CAPS and has not played long enough in the NHL!
Ken Griffey Jr’s gotta be on there too. He is the “clean” face of the steroid era.
Griffey is a good one. Sometimes I forget he still plays. And you’re right, Mike, he is the clean face in a time where many were juicing. He does at least deserve an honorable mention. Who would you take out and where would you put him, though?
